Different packs differ on this subject. Our pack includes first-graders through fifth graders. First-graders are Tiger Cubs, second-graders are Wolves, third-graders are Bears, and fourth and fifth-graders are Webelos. Once a boy enters the sixth grade, he moves up to Boy Scouts. Please refer to the Boy Scouts tab for location and contact information.

For our pack, we allow boys to join at any time. The traditional recruiting period is at the beginning of the school year, but a boy can join later in the year. He may not complete all of the den's achievements, but he'll still have a whole lot of fun.

Yes. Your son can even join Webelos when he's in the fifth grade even if he's never been a cub scout at all. He won't be able to earn a lot of the badges and awards that others have earned, but CAN still earn awards and have a ton of fun while he's doing it!

For our pack, a parent needs to attend the initial registration meeting, but not the regular den meetings, though they are certainly welcome. They are strongly encouraged to attend the monthly pack meetings, since that is when the boys receive their awards and it means so much to have the families there for them.
The one exception is Tigers: all Tigers must always be accompanied by a Tiger Adult partner, which is a parent or guardian who's 18 years old or older. The Tiger and his adult partner are considered a team.
The Pack Committee meets monthly to plan for the pack activities and events. Parents are encouraged to be a part of the pack planning sessions.

Dues: Some packs charge monthly or weekly dues. Our pack does not charge dues.
Registration fees: We do have to charge a registration fee, which is $20 for new boys, and $15 for boys returning or transferring from another pack. There is also a $12 cost if a boy chooses to get Boys Life Magazine. We do offer scholarships for families that cannot pay this.
Uniform cost: In our pack, each den decides what their boys will wear. This is typically the Cub Scout shirt with proper insignias (patches), neckerchief and slide, socks (with shorts), and possibly belt and hat. The shirt, neckerchief and slide costs just over $30. This does not include Pack numbers and Council patches. Our pack provides scholarships.
Handbook: Every boy needs a handbook for his particular den. These cost from $6 to $15, depending on level and style of handbook.
